What’s All the Fuss About? Solution Focused Hypnotherapy Explained

What is solution focussed hypnotherapy?

Solution focussed hypnotherapy combines psychotherapy and hypnosis. Psychotherapy is extremely beneficial in itself, and its effects are magnified and often accelerated by hypnosis, which allows the subconscious mind to engage in making beneficial changes that are right for you personally.

Many people believe that therapy and hypnotherapy are ‘done’ to them; that they explain their difficulty to the therapist who then simply makes the problem magically disappears.

Solution focused hypnotherapy is a much more collaborative process and it is important to understand that change happens not just because you want it to but because you are prepared to take the necessary steps to allow it to happen. The success of any kind of psychotherapy depends on how committed and engaged you are in this process.

There are many different kinds of psychotherapy which aim to help people overcome stress or emotional problems. Psychotherapy is often referred to as a ‘talking therapy’. Solution focussed hypnotherapy is a form of talking therapy that also uses trance to achieve positive outcomes for clients.

Solution focussed psychotherapy and hypnotherapy avoid talking about problems or analysing painful memories. If you have experienced unpleasant events, we acknowledge they happened and help you move forward from where you are to where you want to be. We will use a future-focussed approach that is designed to reduce anxiety and promote a state of calm. We will:

  • determine where you are at present:
  • identify where you want to be;
  • help you to make the necessary changes

The “initial consultation” is a session that involves information gathering to assess what you want to achieve, how hypnotherapy can help you, and how many sessions you are likely to need. After this, further sessions involve much more than just hypnosis. During the first part of each session we’ll talk about the progress you have made, and I’ll encourage you to express yourself positively, focusing on solutions rather than dwelling on problems.

I’ll help you to imagine a future you would like, a future where you have a greater quality of life. I’ll then guide you into a relaxed state of trance so that you can consolidate what we have discussed. Each session you will take small steps that will help you to achieve your goal in as short a time as possible.

What is hypnosis like?

Hypnosis and trance are a very common state that we all experience every day. Have you ever driven home and not remembered anything about the journey? or been so engrossed in a book that you have not been aware of time passing? Maybe you enjoy running or going to the gym and get into a state of flow? This state of focused attention is similar to the feeling of being hypnotised. During hypnosis, I will guide you into a similar state so that beneficial suggestions can be directed towards your subconscious mind.

What hypnosis is

Hypnosis is simply a state of focused attention. In this relaxed state, your mind is more responsive to suggestion. In a therapeutic setting, the suggestions are designed to be beneficial to help you change unhelpful thought patterns.

Clients often comment about how ‘ordinary’ hypnosis feels – it’s not unlike daydreaming. You can often hear everything that is being said whilst in a deeply relaxed state. In fact, you could think of it as guided daydreaming. However, some people find that they completely switch off and are mostly unaware of my voice – this is all perfectly natural, and your conscious mind does not need to be aware of what I’m saying in order for treatment to be effective.

What hypnosis isn’t

Contrary to the popular image portrayed in the media, hypnosis does not involve the therapist taking control of your mind – no one can hypnotise you against your will. Nobody can make you do anything you do not want to – your subconscious mind will simply reject any suggestion that is inappropriate for you.

*Hypnotherapy is an effective way of dealing with many issues. However, results can vary and success is not guaranteed. Full client engagement is an important factor.
