How does trauma affect us?
Some trauma stems from forgotten, almost inconsequential events that can result in fears or phobias. However, many of us experience deeper traumas that we shy away from addressing out of the fear that this will be too painful, that we may not recover from our distress, or even that we will be re-traumatised by delving into the origins. Traumatic events often happen in childhood, shaping our whole lives in terms of our underlying beliefs about ourselves, other people and the world in general, but they can also be experienced at any point in life. They often leave lasting scars, affecting how we think, feel and respond to other people or situations every day.
People who experience childhood trauma often experience life as an emotional rollercoaster, rarely knowing why they experience strong emotional reactions; they struggle to tolerate strong emotions and deal with them by trying to block them out in some way; they can struggle in their relationships with friends, family and loved ones, and find communication difficult; and they can find it difficult to stay in the present moment. This can lead to difficulty planning life or scheduling events as it’s hard to know what you can cope with if you have no idea how you will be feeling. It can also lead to extreme behaviours in an attempt to cope with emotions (such as addictions, self-harm, extreme avoidance), zoning out (or dissociation) and chaotic relationships that can end abruptly and leave you feeling abandoned. If any of this relates to you, I can help you re-create a sense of peace, safety and wellbeing by using the skills I have learnt during my career as a psychological therapist and those that I have gained in holistic practice.
Fear can keep us completely paralysed. But if we remain paralysed, we stay stuck with the effects of our trauma. However, recovery is possible, and I have helped many people achieve truly life-changing results
What if you could heal those deep wounds in a gentle, effective way?
I offer an innovative approach that is tailor made to each individual. Thanks to decades working in psychological therapy services, I am well practised in teaching coping skills, from anxiety management skills to techniques that are based in dialectical behaviour therapy that focus on emotional regulation, mindfulness, relationship skills and getting through distressing times as safely as possible. I am also well practised in using powerful psychological techniques to help uncover and process the root causes of trauma, again thanks to my experience working in therapy services within the NHS.
Schema therapy: This technique helps identify and challenge the deeply ingrained beliefs formed during traumatic experiences, or even less than ideal childhood experiences. Together, we can identify the thought patterns and behaviours that have developed as a way of coping with extremely distressing situations and develop a shared understanding of what is going on and why. By accessing these patterns in a relaxed, hypnotic state, we can reframe negative thoughts and beliefs and shift your mindset towards healthier, more positive beliefs about yourself and the world. We can also use regression techniques to help us to understand the causes of difficult feelings, and I can help to provide the “emotional vitamins” that were lacking in early life and almost re-write your history with you so that it’s almost as if we have deleted the past and re-written it how it should have been.
Parts therapy: We often experience internal conflict, where different parts or ourselves are stuck in old patterns (ever wanted to lose weight, but a part of you keeps reaching for chocolate?). When we have experienced trauma, we can feel stuck in knowing what we would like to change but feeling unable to do so. Parts therapy helps you to understand, heal and integrate these fragmented parts so that you can achieve inner harmony, a quieter mind free from negative chatter, and break free from the emotional pain that keeps you trapped in old patterns of behaviour.
Regression: Regression allows you to gently return to past memories, uncovering the root cause of your trauma, but in hypnotherapys this can be done with emotional distance so that it is much less painful or distressing. Be reliving and reprocessing these experiences in a safe and controlled way, you can release the emotions attached to them, enabling deep healing. Together, we can then re-write the past to give you corrective emotional experiences (“emotional vitamins”) to cement your healing.
Take therapy at your own pace
Any form of addressing deep trauma is done at your own pace – there is no need to rush into things that you are not ready to face. This is one reason why I focus on coping skills, and general hypnotherapy, as it often takes time to develop enough trust to work on more complex issues. Another reason is that we can all benefit from processing our stress, and when I worked in therapy teaching Dialectical Behaviour Therapy skills, many clients were amazed and commented that these should be taught in school to equip us all to cope better with life.
Hypnotherapy with me can meet you where you’re at in terms of your wants, needs and recovery. We can focus on coping skills, resolve all manner of issues in the present, or address the root cause of your symptoms (not just the conscious surface level) as and when your conscious and subconscious minds are ready. Rather than just focussing on managing the emotional aftermath, these techniques allow you to dig deep, heal, and emerge stronger than before – all in the least painful and least invasive way.
Create your own brighter future
I also practice solution-focussed hypnotherapy for those not at a point where they wish to delve into the past, or where such an approach is unnecessary. Together, we can create the positive future you want and deserve.
